best finish to use on gun stock

hi all, hope to find out what the best finish to apply to a timber gun stock! if anyone has any recommendations as to what would be best, I was thinking danish oil?

'Boiled' Linseed oil. Flood it on, leave for a bit, wipe off. Repeat daily for a week or so until it builds up a 'surface'. Depending on use and storage you will need to repeat this as the finish continues to cure and to make up for any wear.

For a commercial finish 'Birchwood Casey' make a reasonable proprietary finish that should be available from some of the bigger firearms dealers, but I don't know if it can be mailed these days (may be considered 'flammable' or 'explosive').

IIRC most 'Danish oil' finishes are linseed oil and shellac, and they charge a considerable premium for basic ingreedients. So called 'Tung Oil Finishes' usually are much the same, no Tung oil, just linseed or some other 'drying' oil and a bit of shellac or polyurethane varnish - check the can carefully, it should say 'Tung Oil' and specify 'pure' or '100% Tung Oil', no mystery hydrocarbons or gobbledegook ingreedients.

Don't buy a large quantity expecting it to last either - the 'good oils' will polymerise in the can/jar once oxygen gets in there, so some will 'go off' even when unopened.

For a oil finish I use Tru -Oil, as wth any finish preparation is the secret to a high quailty finish

+4 for Tru-Oil although I always give the innards a couple of coats of waterproof clear coat first.

+5 for Birchwood Casey true Oil - used it on my Anschutz Mod 1532 .22H about 35 years ago, and it's still going strong!.

Made the fiddle-back and tiger tail grain in the european walnut stock, shine like a dollar on a sweeps ass!
