I want to incorporate a vise that will hold work at right angles to the bench front (as in the jaws of a tail-vise)

I'd lean toward the little box, particularly if you plan on using handcut dovetails.

Just little boxes - I was thinking of light jobs that don't need any heavy lifting, that's all!
