Default Best finish for front door

Does anyone have views or info on the best way to treat front doors. I would like a clear finish but want it to last. Do I varnish or oil or should I bite the bullet and paint.

    Thanks

Have you considered a good Spar Varnish?

Very similar to the stuff you'd use on floors, but with UV blockers as well... originally designed for use on boats to handle widely varying temps, weather and - of course - heavy UV.

    Bit pricey, but worth it.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

I used Feast and Watsoon (?) marine varnish on mine. Still looks good.

Go to the marina or boating shop - use what they use on sailing boats - follow the instructions to the letter and you should have something that not only looks good but will last much longer than what you can buy from the "green box" or similar.
