Thanks for the suggestions. And the wake up call.
I've never had a bench. I've always done stuff on trestles and the ground or wherever. I probably made a mistake in getting it looking too good. I'll relax once I've put a few dings in it.

Here's the finished bench. I was originally just looking for a vice. The vice (with attached bench) cost $157.50 on eBay. The boiled linseed oil worked well. I thinned it 50/50 with turps as suggested on the bottle. I've put it on locking casters so I can move it around - it's easy to lift each end and put something under it when I need it more solid for planning or something.

Scott,
Very nice bench
When I built mine from recycled pine pallets, I flattened the top, filled and voids with epoxy and waxed it.
Now just a wipe down with wax and grease remover then wax it again. I just wanted an easy maintainable top.
Don't realy care about the dings etc as at some point a clean, sand, fill with epoxy, sand and wax again.

The fact your bench has a soft top is not a disadvantage, unless you are using dogs. Most of my work is in Australian Red Cedar and I loath hard benches when working soft timbers.

To use a dog, I would need to know what one is. And what they are used for. What the heck is a dog?.

At last! Someone who knows a least a little less than me! Oh Glorious Day.
Great score for the dough Scott. As you say, the vise was worth it, with the bench as an accessory.

Good one FF, you didn't tell him what dogs were!!
I have to agree though that is a great score. Buy a vice and get a free bench, awesome.
Scott, dogs are used to hold timber in place while you work it.
see here
They go into round or square holes in the bench, but you can easily get along without them.
Anyway, cheers on you great pickup,

If you deal with the lowest bidder it is well to add something for the risk you run.
And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better"
