Some pretty amazing wood from what is considered a 'pest'!
For the sake of my sanity, why is it a 'pest'? Fast spreading by root or something?

Technically a pest, or in this case a weed, is something that grows out of place. Most often it is an introduced species although that would not be the case with the accacias.

As I am not familiar with this wattle I don't know why it in particular is regarded that way. In fact I didn't know it had this reputation. Camphor Laurel is another example of something that has almost a noxious weed status, although not normally amongst woodworkers .

I have a lot of Black Wattles around me here, they are a pest here because they come up as regrowth, and if you let them be, they get fairly big and after 10 or 20 years they seem to just die.

I have just cut 6 down behind my shed, before they fell on the shed. I have cut up some for future use, and Troy is coming around to take away a ute-load soon.

Thanks, seems weeds have the same problem everywhere.... I always thought a 'weed' was a plant with a people problem. Truly a great color piece of timber!

This tree grows fairly quickly and suckers (Shoots appear from Damaged roots). There is a lot of Farming country around where I live and these trees will grow back quickly on country that has been cleared,

Had the chance a while ago to mill a Sally wattle tree that came down in storm. This tree is a pest up here but I love the timber, It mills Well,is easy to work with woodworking tools and takes a finish well, it' only drawback is it is hard to find long straight sections, without twist...................

I reckon you're forgetting something there Jon - can't leave out the 'distinctive' smell of the stuff - doesn't exactly chase you out of the shed but you certainly wouldn't be stuffing your pillow with the shavings
