    Default What fish is that?

Can anyone tell me what breed of fish this is? My wife caught it recently off a little reef on the southern end of Fraser Island.

Tastes like a snapper but opinion as to just what it is is divided...

Its probably obvious to those that are more proficient fishermen than me (which would be most) I dont think its a snapper - maybe a black jewfish?

I'm with Gordo, my Neville Coleman 'Australian Sea Fishes South of 30°S' has a picture that looks very much like that. (minus the proud blond & the tinnie. ). He says it does occur in Qld.

He calls it Painted sweetlips, slatey sweetlips, moke, smokey bream.
Techo name Plectorhynchus pictus (Thunberg) 1787 but my book is 25 years old now. He says he was told it was a 'dopey bream' & regarded as poor eating but he says he has enjoyed eating it more than once.

I don't care what it is. Next time I go fishing, can I borrow your wife? Beats the live bait me and the lad catch.

    Cheers

That fish is a Slate Sweetlip.Often referred to as a mother inlaw fish. i;e the fish you give to your mother inlaw.Though it is undeserving of the common name.Bleed them straight away and they are great. Grow to just over a metre.
