    Smile Jarrah Floorboards

We have beautiful recycled jarrah floorboards which have been finished in a satin sheen/gloss around 12 mths ago. They are now horribly scratched (mainly due to our toddler pushing hard plastic toys around). Can anyone tell me if having a high-gloss finish is more scratch resistant than the satin finish? Thanks for your help

You wont stop the scratches, all finishes will scratch to some extent, 2pac's(like, estipol 7008)are about the best for scratch resistance.

When i did my floors the best advice i got was to use a 2 pac first and a 1 pac on top re coat with 1 pac as required
apperently the 2 pac though much harder can crazy crack if heavy things are dropped on it the 1 pac on top stops this
Did the floors 10 years ago when i retired and when the last daughter moved out thought about resealing, put it off for two years and now have two grandsons scratching it. It does look better if you mop it with a metho water mix weekly 1 cup metho 1 bucker water , a much stronger solution may be needed on the first go test an area say in a corner first
This does help hide some of the worst marks but If you can put up with it leave it as it is a floor and will always get marked and kids will be kids.

I'm no expert but I think a low sheen or even flat finish would minimise scratches - you notice them more with a satin as the edges of the scratch catch the light more. A flat finish isn't necessarily dull as long as there are enough other things in the house or environment to help bounce the light around.

We did a cyprus pine floor in our studio and found that using a floor polish over the top helps keep it looking good. keep it clean as dirt is a real criminal for scratching floors and the polishes readily available will help put a coating over the top so the floor has some extra protection against scratching.
