dating english stanleys
Hi there,
I know this question is old like New England, but is there a way to date english stanleys bench planes?
I'm considering to treat myself with a smoother but using hyperkitten all i get is nonsense. I could go Record but i'm curious.
Many things.

Well, there's this.
I'm sure we can make up a type study for these, I don't expect any Americans to do so any time soon. Howabout:
Type 1: 1937-1939
Type 2: WW2, hard rubber adjusting nuts..
Type 3: Postwar - steel bits
Type 4: Whenever those rib thingys appear on the beds (about 1972)
Type 5: Whenever the beds are marked 12-00X?
Type 6: 1983-present. The G12-00X planes
And this.
f you're interested, you can date your plane at
The Stanley Bench Plane Dating Page
Although the dates are specific to US planes, mainly the #4, you'll get a reasonable idea as to where yours fits in by checking the properties of the #6 you have. If you look at the images at the B & G page, you'll notice the various designs throughout the years.

I know people have mixed and matched over the years but the kidney hole lever cap came in sometime between the wars.

In fact, when Stanley UK plane production started in 1936, they were based on the USA model of the time - the type #16. So all UK Stanleys have the kidney hole and the ribbed frog face (whereas Record cloned the USA type #14/#15 an therefore have the keyhole and solid frog face). HTH.

I've never dated an English Stanley, but I went out with an Irish Moloney once....
