There is also the argument that if women don't want to experience 'damp' seats, they should get into the habit of raising them after they have finished.

Last time my wife complained that I had left the seat up. I apologised profusely. Then I took by the hand, led her into the toilet, and in a very serious toned explained how the hinge worked.
She didn't talk to me for a week after that, which I considered a win win situation.Chris
