Plane Japanning Info
This fellow has done an outstanding job jappaning his planes. He describes the whole simple process.
The attached picture shows from left to right, his first, second and third efforts and you can see the improvement in results.
Since this guy has compiled so much info and made it look so easy, it makes you wonder why some enterprising soul hasn't started offering this as a service.

An even easier mixture is half-and-half asphaltum (from an art supply shop .. I got some on eBay cheaply) and marine varnish.
This can be used cold. It will cure over a period of 2 weeks to a hard finish. You can speed up the process by leaving the planes out in the sun.
Paint on in thin coats and let this half dry before adding the next coat. It looks quite brown and patchy at first, then darkens to black.
