Hi all,

Have come across the forums a few times over the last 12 months and decided following the recent purchase of a dud biscuit joiner to join up and benefit from the years of experience available here.

Am new to woodwork, but has always been something I've wanted to get into. Have recently welcomed my first child into the world, and am a (mostly) stay at home dad with my now 14month old. I mistakenly thought that being stay at home would allow me some time to get into the shed but so far its been a bit limited.

Currently tools consist of a few clamps, an orbital sander and a hand-me-down circular saw. Managed to make a semi decent job of some left over blackbutt floorboards and made my son a play table, but have now bitten off a significantly larger chunk and am tackling a marri bookcase for his room.

Needless to say am finding it a challenge with rudimentary tools, little time, and little money in the budget for any decent tools - and having just been burned with the cheap biscuit joiner will not be going down that path again too soon.

Well that's me, thanks again for the tips in advance, and look forward to getting some more time in the shed.

Welcome. So you now know what women were on about when they reckoned they couldn't get anything done with a kid around? It does get a little better. A pity men's shed's don't have child care centers attached.

Ah yes, the joys and frustrations of being a Father. My two girls are 6 & 4 and are just starting to be independent with their time. I also remember trying to make a bookcase when I first started, similar to the tools you have now. Making stuff was akin to an elephant stuffed inside a telephone box trying to wipe it's butt. But saying that, I moved onto bigger and better tools which began my affair with wood, including all the dodgy power tool purchases from Bunnings.

5 years on and I still haven't began or finished the bookcase. Welcome to the forums

Welcome and that's how I started out as well with a few hand tools. Still have them but hardly use them now as I prefer machine tools to do the hard work.

My solution to the build up of necessary tools was to ask for a specific tool for fathers days, birthdays and Christmas. Over time you will build up a good selection of necessary , but occasional use only, tools.

Also making jigs helped in using tools to do more accurate work.

Thanks al for the welcome, am slowly making progress on the bookcase, taking some snaps as I go - and will post them up if I ultimately achieve a half decent result!
