Worth keeping this shaper?

Came across an engeneering shop that is closing down. I am a woodworker through and through however couldn't miss an opportunity to get into a bit of metalwork with a few bargains up for grabs. One of the buggers is this shaper. My understanding is that the nut on the sideways adjustment is stripped, passed that there is bugger all wrong with the sucker. Anyhow, it's on it's way to the scrap yard.
I can't watch things like that go to waste. Yes I understand very little even about what does it do. May be it can be a door stop in my shed.

What do you recon fellas? Am I wasting my time? Should I let it go? Or is it good value?
I dunno what he wants for it, I think he will be happy for me to get it out of his way.
What are they worth anyway? I understand shapers have been outphased by complex milling machines. Any advice would be appreciated.

grab it, take it, keep it,buy it, hell, I will even make a new nut for it if you want, just make sure it doesn't go to the scrappie

I'd be grabbing it(well if I didnt have one already). Its certainly worth more than nothing so you cant go wrong.
How much are they worth? well I doubt you'd have much trouble getting $300 for it. Try and make sure the vice doesnt go walking.
Yes milling machines will do most of the things a shaper will do, but the tolling will cost a lot more.
How much room do you have in your shed?

where I am now I've got around 350 squares of sheds. Unfortunatelly, I don't know if I will be sticking around that property for much longer. Either way I need a crane truck to move what I have got so far, one more wouldn't make much difference. However, I have to draw a line somewhere... there are a lot of machines and there is only one of me. May be there is someone interested in taking in the poor old thing? I will still consider it myself, still gotta find out how much...

Please please save it, although there seems to have been a few shapers pop up of late they don't come round too often. Seeing old machines go to the scrap yard is terrible. Your may be up north, but if you don't want it there should be someone who does, somewhere, who will be willing to transport it.

That is a nice solid little shaper, don't let it go for scrap.
Even if you get it and just ebay it for someone that wants it. As for moving it will only weigh around 300kg, so no problem for an engine crane and standard box trailer.

i am finishing building a giant trebuchet, i might be able to swing it your way. Just make sure you are waiting with a 10 square mile air bag to catch it.

good to see such a passionate response about old gear. The shaper found a good home before I got to it. I, however, snapped up a 9" model A Hercus, and some pipe working equipment. Thanks again gentlemen

I'd have a lathe before a shaper any day. Good move. Even better if you can have both.
