As a bit of trivia, in 1840, Thomas Fowler demonstrated a binary calculating machine made of wood to Babbage and other leading mathematicians of the day at King's College. Babbage was reportedly impressed by the simplicity of its design. The only surviving record of its design is a stained glass window.
