Spokeshave
I'm trying to encourage my Dad to renew an interest in woodworking. Sounded to me like a perfect excuse to play with some tool making.
The basic pattern and hardware for this spoke shave came from a Veritas large spoke shave kit, but I wanted a longer (and prettier) front reference surface before the blade, so I added a strip of ebony and burl. I also wanted a better wear strip, so Frankensteined an old brass house number that was about twice the thickness of the brass in the kit (not to mention the strip provided was rather skinny). Top it off with a medallion made from a $1 coin (inspired by Mr Derek Cohen), engraved with Dad's initials. I was really happy with how it came together, and had a lot of fun doing it!
Before I gave it to Dad I had a moment of insecurity about the nice shiny spoke shave getting scratched in his garage (crazy, I know!) so I used some extra scraps of the jarrah, ebony and burl to make a simple box for it.Last edited by Bespoken; 24th January 2012 at 10:06 PM. Reason: addin pics

It doesn't want to live in a box by itself. Thats like a hermit in a cave. It wants to hang on the pegboard with all the other tools in the sun and the air. Just make sure no other pegs within 10 holes of the SS one.

yes, it surely was a moment of weakness. But the box was also fun to do.

Nice spokeshave and a nice box as well. Maybe dad will put his pencils and scribes in the box?

Very well done. It looks great. You don't want to adopt another Dad, do you?
