Been reading a lot of great stories and info on this forum.
I think it's fantastic that everyone is so helpful and willing to share knowledge and expiriences.
I have just started out turning and am well and truly addicted, it's vitually all i think about now........... especially when I'm stuck in the office at work.
Really looking forward to going to my first Turnfest in a couple of weeks!
and the Maleny Wood festival and the Brisbane Working with Wood shows, they are a great opportunity to meet fellow woodys and get some great timber to add to the collection.
I have three bedrooms and 2 sheds full of timber (my girlfriend and family think I might have a problem with collecting wood)


I would like to have a go at some big vases, Has anyone had a crack at vases close to a meter in height, what did you use to hollow them out?

I have a vl300 vicmarc wth the long bed extension I bought from a really nice ol bloke Vincet who couldn't turn anymore. I felt sad buying it off him as he watched me leave with it.
It has given me so much joy though turning away on the weekends, it's a great chance to forget about all the worries and stress.

Welcome to the forum. I have also started turning but have gone the pen turning direction at the moment. Will try turning bowls in the not too distance future.

I've gone the heavy lumps of wood, thank God nothing's come off and collected me yet (touch wood)

Welcome to the forum Damien, I like your work particularly the finish that you have achieved and you obviously have experience in turning, would like to see some more examples of your creations......You have picked an extravanganza of a Turnfest to wet your appetite and you will get some fantastic inspiration....cheers Kerry

You were right, Turnfest was spectacular, I went to about 30 hours of demos and it was just briiliant. Will definately be back next year.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed Turnfest, by the end of it I think that I was a bit 'turned out' but have come away with plenty of inspiration....just have to allocate time to apply it......cheers kerry

Hello again Kerry,

Went to see Brian Mcevoy from Canada on the last day of Turnfest, what a brilliant demo and a really nice bloke, also got to meet his lovely wife Leslie and also his good friends from Ballina, Les and Judy.
I have been looking for a way to safely do some deep hollowing on vases and urns up around a meter or so and I found exactly what I was after with Brian.

His website One Good Turn is very informative and I bought about nine hours of instructional dvd's while he was here and they are great. so I've started saving up for one of Brian's boring bars.

Also found Gordon Pembridge's session to be great also. Really looking forward to next year.

Also looking forward to the Maleny Wood Festival on the 5-6th of May.

Good on you Damien, Brian's DVD's are very informative......did you ask Brian about plans for his deep hollowing tool?
