Broadband - at last.

Little Johnny has subsidised me into an up/down satellite connection via the Hibis scheme.
Yeeeeehaaaaah. This thing is really working now. No more time to make a cuppa between key strokes.

I got my subsidised 2 way satelite connection 2 months ago. You may not notice going from snailband to broadband but apart from downloading files that run at about a meg in 30 seconds, I find it slower than the 64k ISDN connection I had.

It always seems to be waiting for whatever website you are connecting to. Once the website answers it loads fairly quickly, but it can wait any thing up to 15 seconds for the site to answer.

How do you find it.

I was warned before the event that there is a lag factor at the beginning of each access to a site. My son-in-law, an IT wizard living in the sticks, has 2 way satellite and gave me the bad news as well as the good news. I was not expecting miracles.
Once it locates the source site, the 15 seconds that you are talking about, it is at least 5 or 6 times faster than my old, good quality, dial-up.
You having come from ISDN didn't start quite so far back as I did, so may not see as much benefit.
The test, so they tell me, is to go back to your old connection for a while. I can do that because my dial-up is pre-paid for another few months. The S-in-L tells me I will be amazed at just how slow it was.
Mention broadband and everyone thinks ADSL or cable. Satellite is just not in the same league and that can cause disappointment.

Rob, I can relate to that. Last couple of days our cable speed was restricted to 28kps as we exceeded our monthly download plan limit. Was getting timed out a lot of times. Most of the time I could be bothered with downloading one page at a time.

Optus does this rather than charge excess fees or cut you of completely. I suppose I can't complain 15 gig in prime time and 12 gig between 2 am and 7 am in 28 days.

Craig, my daughter likes to watch a number of favourite tv shows as soon as screened in Seppo land. Downloads them, usually overnight and during the day when I'm in my workshop, and then watches them at night.


The worst bit is that we haven't found anyone that records Norm's shows on his computer on a regular basis. :mad:

My grandson has a 40 gig limit on the highest speed and pays $109.00 a month for it and is downloading TV series from the states all the time.

He goes to bed at night and his computer does automatic searches and downloads all night while he is sleeping.

He has the whole of the first season of Lost and part of the next season and has the latest season of the Simpsons. He reckons the Simpsons is about 4 to 5 years behind here.

I've just switched from 28k dialup to broadband so I know exactly how you feel.

Bazza, I know how your son feels about the tv episodes - I watch The Shield, channel 10 has only shown series one but I'm getting series four as it shows on US tv.

I just upgraded Nortons. The download speed was 8 to 10 times as fast as my old 56k dial-up.
All you ADSL and cable connected people will laugh at that but, out here in the sticks, that is a good connection.
