Now my head is full of ways to build a steam powered shaper and I think I have settled on a design.

I wonder if the ram could be directly driven by steam?

    Easy peasy Ray
The queen city shaper would be easy. I would just shift into my workshop and belt it up. Running direct off the cylinder sounds like fun and is actually old technology. I have two items that work that way already.

What have you started Ray lol.

    Hi Phil,
I think a new thread is in order, exploring the possiblities for steam powered shapers.
The idea that you can run a workshop with no electricity and just a bit of firewood and water is somehow very appealing...

Nasmyth called his first shaper a 'steam arm': www.lathes.co.uk/nasmyth
Edit: Though it was intended to be driven from the factory engine, rather than its own.
