    Default Spotted Gum Side Tables

My partner has just finished making 2 beautiful bedside tables out of spotted gum. Now we are trying to decide what to finish it with. They will be bedside tables and we will have drinks etc on them so we need them to be protected to a certain extent - also want something which is not going to scratch too easily (not that we will be roughhousing them or anything!!). Would appreciate some advice on a finish that will show off this beautiful timber.

    Thanks a lot in advance!!

I finished a spotted gum hall table in Danish oil and it looks great. It's also very easy to apply.

An oil finish will be much easier to fix if it gets scatched than say a poly finish.

Use coasters under your drinks and you shouldn't have any problems.

    Hi Kev,

Thanks for sharing your experience, did you need to use a sanding sealer is the next question?

Ps I hate coasters but I KNOW i should use them!!

I didn't use sanding sealer. Just make sure you have sanded through the grits up to at least 400, then apply 2 or 3 coats of oil as per the instructions on the can.

You should re-apply with oil every 12 months.

Coasters - now there's an idea for your next project

    Regards

    Kev
