finish to tone down silky ?
Do you know any tricky dicky crafty finish methods for silky oak thats NOT cut on the quarter that'll stop all those frigen medullarys from popping.
I've getting close to finishing. And quite like silky without a finish. Can actually see the growth rays, with all those medullary specks hidden , being all greyed out from sanding.
But as soon as I put a finish on it, its going to blast my senses.
I've experimented with some light toned finishes...
waxwhite shellac...
fw danish oil.
yellow shellac....
tradional wax ( was the best I guess because the wax filled the specks, but a stronger finish is wanted this time) ....so then I tried a couple of wax finishes with shellac over....and the shellac pulled off.
and they all pop those medullary specks.
I've tried burnishing hard first thinking maybe it might stop them being so porous. didn't work. which was stupid thinking about it now.
thinking some kind of whitish sealer that will cloud them up light toned...?
appreciate your thoughts.
thanks
Jake

Black Japan Nar but how about some matt poly. Its the shine on the smooth surfaces that makes it pop I think. Be worth a little test.
