Carved Mantel Section2
Another section of the mantel. Laminated 2x6 Basswood. Depth of relief up to 4 inches in some areas.
This image was taken with a film camera and printed, copied, then digitized so it has suffered a lot in the translations.
This was my first mantel carving and the second carving I ever attempted, when I began my career as a woodcarver. At the time I think I owned all of about 15 chisels, which I didn't really know how to sharpen. I pretty quickly ground them away in the process of learning how to create an edge suitable to the task at hand.

Thanks to those of you providing me with tips about how to use this site. It's a great forum, seems to have many functions and means of use. I appreciate all of your suggestions as to how to use the site and do it more efficiently.
