Renewing Stain and Lacquer

Hello all...I am trying to clean up old window frames and skirting boards that are old and they are stained with Jarrah and Varnish....probably 40-50years old.....I want to freshen them up with some stain and then Varnish over them again....Can I lightly sand ....apply some stain (same colour) and then lacquer over the top?? The stain seems to penetrate the old coating and it would save a lot of time rather than stripping to bare timber....Can this be done?

try it on an out of place small window and see what it looks like when finished

Thanks...I tried it by lightly sanding and the stain penetrates and looks great will try the lacquer next and if it holds will save me a lot of stripping...
