    Default Eucalyptus log home

    Hi Guys
This is a general enquiry to find out if anyone has used E. Saligna, E.Grandis or E.diversicolor for building a log home.
I have used this timber for my own log home in South Africa. I used it for the house structure, floor and ceiling boards, furniture, kitchen cupboards - in short - everything.
I would like to know if any of you aussies have done similar.

    Default I guess not then

So far I assume there is no one who has built a Eucalyptus home then.

    Hi Roy,

Glad to see a new member, and a new thread which is out of the ordinary.

There are log homes out there , mainly in the alternate lifestyle groups , not so much in the main stream housing . Remember we have some of the most vicious termites in the world, I know found them in the architrave of the back door this morning, and given a quote of 2 thou to treat. Just my luck I got the 2nd worst variety.

Back on subject, I have seen straw bale houses, stone, timber slab and mud brick, but I do not believe that I have seen log houses ,promoted as such.

If I built a LOG HOUSE over here, I would look seriously at building with CYPRESS PINE , THE TERMITES AVOID IT SO DO THE ANTS, (do not use plantation cypress) only wild CYPRESS due to variety differences.

    Hi Jeff
Yes, Cypress would be good, but does not grow here in suitable sizes.
The Saligna grows nice and straight and tall, we have a tree that is 80m tall somewhere upcountry.
We don't have a termite problem in this area.
I'm making a post in 'big stuff' forum, just hoping to find out if there is anyone else who has built an entirely eucalyptus home.

    Nice work Roy.

    RE: Aussie log homes.
Try google - there seems to be quite a few out there.

In 2010 I visited a town in British Columbia and had a look at the construction site for pioneer log homes of BC - here's s link to a thread about it with a few pics.
