I'm happy to call it quits and start again. Howver I believe here as in life, if you lead with your chin, someone will hit it. You have probably worked that out by now though.

Cos ya nuthin' but a dopey sheila I am happy to forgive and forget. I will not however, fail to get carried away on a whim and become dogmatic if I wish. That's me, like it or put me on your ignore list.

Interesting phenomenon isn't it? When you're anonymous, people feel they can say whatever they want to whoever they want. I bet very few people here would talk to someone like that face to face. It's a bit like road rage I suppose.

Not being critical, just making an observation. I've had my fun with various faceless people too.

Now why don't you all pee off and get off my computer screen?

Well, I'm prepared to forgive and forget too.

(who were we talking about again ?)
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Just out of interest.... Got a son, daughter or partner who may have accessed a site on your computer some time during the last few months. All may protest their inocence but don't believe them, because it's London to a brick on that someone has if you are getting that sort of spam. It may have only been once, it may have been inadvertantly done and only for a split second but that's all it takes for them to latch on to you.

The beginning of the spam may also have coencided with a change of Internet Service Provider. Many employ their own spam filters but not all do and sometimes they don't work very well. Some have even dropped their filters.

Just trying to help out. Really hate banning members, especially for no good reason. So far all the banned ones have well and truely deserved it, you don't.

    Cheers - Neil

if you must suft sites try this :

turn off all cookies except ones coming from ubeaut!
run adaware, spybot, spyware doctor, antivir every day or so and update thier definitions regularly
run windows xp2 firewall turn on auto update enable
use a harware router to shield you from the net
turn off pop ups. dont subscribe to anything.

I dont surf except wheen one of the freaks on this board posts his own photo and I need to cleanse my memory - Sir stinkalots school photo comes to mind; Shudder!!!(hah!@!!!) so I only assume this will help you out but I rarely get spam and hardly ever have to rebuild my registry or hard drive. truely!

I've read this two or three times, and I reckon it is being critical, not undeserved, not harsh, even constructive, but criticism none the less. I agree with the road rage a bit though, guess human nataure means ya gotta be less subtle when when there is some separation.

I'll try and be a good boy from now on, I feel a bit guilty, cos I know I'm probably more guilty than most.

Nah, it wasn't really. At least I didn't mean it to be. It just struck me that a lot of the stuff said here (not restricted to this post) would never be said in a face to face conversation. It's a bit of fun but stepping back you can see how people might get upset about it.

Like once when I mouthed a few choice words at this bloke who cut me off. When he got out of his car to come back and discuss it with me, I couldn't help noticing that he was much taller than his posture in the car implied and he had certainly been working out. I wound down the window and told him I was singing to the radio. Fortunately, I had Triple J playing at the time, so he had to give me the benefit of the doubt.

I'm with Niel on this... I fix computers for a living & the FIRST question I ask any home user with a 'slow' problem is "Do you have kids?" The 2nd question is "Are the teenagers?" if the say yes to both I tell them "I can fix it BUT... no warranty 'cos they'll break it again in the next 2 weeks for sure."

Seriously, no sheyet... we have more problems with bludy Spyware than Viruses these days.
I use an ADSL Router with a built in firewall, Spybot V1.3, Zonealarm, Vet, XP SP2 & I keep IE right up to date.... I still get some spam but I use Mailwasher & dob in the spammers to Spamcop.

    Thanks Neil and others,

For both the suggestions and advice. Accessing sites is a remote possibility, as the pc is available to many others even though it is mostly business related.

I have to say I've learnt a lesson (or three) through this so it's not been wasted. CYA later.

    Are they blokes????
Do the work later than you do????
If you said yes to all of the about, your computer might need a wash, with soap......

Do you know how to look through the 'History'?
Even if the history has been deleted, there is HEAPS to be found in the Tempory Internet folder..... it will give you dates, times & sites visited.

I've also been getting the "Viagra" type spam. I don't surf sites and I doubt that SWMBO does. A couple of points to note:

Have you noticed the deliberate mis-spelling of words such as "Viagra" in the subject line of these emails to fool spam filters. In some cases, words are made up of a mixture of letters, numbers and symbols (e.g. substituting 1 for l or i or 0 for O etc.)

I am fairly sure my receipt of the "Viagra" type spam is somehow related to my use of ebay. I have been buying and selling stuff on ebay recently and was getting two of these emails every day, regular as clockwork. I noticed when I reduced my ebay activity, the spam also reduced. Currently I don't have any items listed on ebay and haven't received this type of spam for several days.

I'm not suggesting that ebay themselves are responsible, though they certainly have the data and capability. More likely someone has figured out how to extract the email addresses of sellers (and perhaps buyers) from the ebay database to target.

Until recently I've also been receiving spam job offers and offers of payment for reviewing books etc. These were just bait to confirm the recipient's email address and obtain further personal details to allow more selective spam marketing.

In that case, I know they originally got my email address from a friend's address book. (i.e. they used a trojan to collect all contact addresses in that person's address book). Fortunately my precautions prevented them harvesting my address book also.

What I am suggesting here is that you can get spam email through no fault of your own. All it takes is for one of your friends or business contacts to be slack in protecting the privacy of their address book. Once you are on such a spam list it is difficult to get off it. I have had to resort to changing my email address and giving some of my slacker friends the old defunct address.

    regards
    Coldamus
