From Wikepaedia:
"The Fifth Amendment protects witnesses from being forced to incriminate themselves. To "plead the Fifth" is to refuse to answer a question because the response could provide self-incriminating evidence of an illegal act punishable by fines, penalties or forfeiture."
I like the alchoholic analogy; Much more interesting and is more closely aligned to Woodwould's story'.
The difference in american and imperial gallons is probably why we ended up with 44gal drums. I suspect in america they are 50gals.

Drums here are typically 55 gallons and 25 gallons. Good luck trying to figure that one out.
The fifth of whiskey is history. Booze has been metric here for several years. The fifth is still convenient in conversation, though; e.g. "For a safe and sane fourth of July, don't buy a fifth on the third." And old hot-rodders will remember, "I've got four on the floor, and a fifth under the seat."
