Staining Maple Burl Veneer
Hello all,
I am building a fireplace mantel and have used some maple burl veneer on the face of it. I'd like to use a cherry stain on the the mantel, but when I tested a scrap of the burl veneer, it soaked up the stain (Minwax cherry) very quickly and looks bad. Has anyone had success using a wood conditioner on burl, or is there some other way to get it to stain evenly?

David MArks who hosts a show on pay TV (Austar Digital) called "woodworks" often finishes projects incorporating burl with potassium dichromate or his own Tung Oil mix. Heres his website....................you might get a few ideas from here.

why spoil a good burl??? :confused:
if you want a cherry finnish why not use cherry ?

G'day mates,
I used several different spieces of wood in this project, and wanted to use a little stain to help match up the coloring of the wood. But after looking at some of the nice work on David Marks' website, I'm thinking that maybe I shouldn't try to match up the colors. He has some great pieces there made of multiple spieces.
Thanks for the tip. It is snowing tonight up here in St. Louis. Good night to stay inside and work in the shop! I was lucky enough to travel to Sydney and Newcastle a few years ago for work. It was a great experience! I'm an engineer for Boeing and went to the RAAF base at Newcastle to train a group of officers on making software changes on their F/A-18s. They were a great group of guys.

2pack seal the item first , sand it back and put a top coat on , let it flash off and SPRAY the stain on then give it another build coat of topcoat , let it dry , cut it back with 400 - 600 and one final top coat , it will look beautiful. take the time to do some practice first on any old peice of wood.
cherry being a pretty light colour will be much better sprayed on rather than wiped.
though you cant beat the netural look of a nice maple burl peice.
