Chippendale Footstool WIP
As per my post a few weeks ago, (https://www.woodworkforums.com/f10/fi...arving-135641/) I am in the process of making a Chippendale footstool.
Thought I might as well start a WIP thread on my little project.
The timber I am using is Melunak, so far I am pretty happy with the way things are going considering until about 2 weeks ago I had never really done any carving.
The Stool is based on an episode to Tommy Macs Rought Cut woodworking show.
Anyway here are some pics.
Picture 1 Stock Milled and ready to be bandsawn
Picture 2 & 3 Marking out the feet
Picture 4 Cleaning out the talons
Picture 5 Initial rounding of the ball
Picture 6 Dry fit at the end of the day.

Thanks for that Joe. Not being a furniture maker, I appreciate seeing how it is done.

Great start!
I haven't come across Melunak before; how does it compare to Mahogany? It looks like a fair substitute from your photos.
.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
Regards, Woodwould.

Thanks Everyone
Yes, most of the initial shaping work is done on the bandsaw. If you check the link i posted you'll see my test peice and a sample straight off the bandsaw.
I havent done much with Mahogany, but Malunak is normally offered as a cheap alternative to Blackwood. It does vary a lot in color and density, I have some boards that are as dark as Jarrah and as hard as a rock.
