Squares, centres and mitres
Don't know if this falls into the heading of handtools but I will ask anyway.
Does anyone know of a suppier of good quality lay out tools (combination squares, ect,).?
I am getting fed up with my El Cheapo combination square.
Thanks

Colen Clenton and Chris Vesper (both Aussies) make fantastic lay out tools.

I've picked up a number of Starrett tools on ebay. Great condition and a fraction of retail.

Colen's squares can't be beat, IMO. Being able to easily adjust them is a boon. His service is spot on, too, & in the rare event you do have a problem, he will attend to it without quibbles. Not the cheapest tools around, but amortised over your (& your heirs) lifetimes, a pretty good deal.
Just a happy customer.....

Cheap & nasty squares aren't always bad, you just don't know how square they are. I picked up an engineers square from Carbi-tec & took that into bunnys with me & checked out all their squares till found 1 that really was square. I use my engineers square now as a reference for all other tools.

At the lower-priced end of the scale, I can highly recommend Shinwa squares from toolsfromjapan: Shinwa 'Mighty' square. : Tools from Japan, Japanese woodworking tools direct from Japan.
I find them to be nicely made, well finished and accurate. IMO they're far better than the price would suggest.

Well that proved to be an expensive question.
I'd love a Colen Clenton square but basic financial reality kicked in and I have taken everyones advice and bought a Starrett combination square from Ebay for $9O odd.
Thanks to all

maybe a bit late for Chris, but I reccon the best value has to be this 4 square set for $79 from Richard Gifkins http://www.gifkins.com.au/Precision%...ut%20tools.pdf
