More on my pets
Found this in the back yard today, can't find it in any of my books, anyone know what it is?

Never seen a spider quite like that, but whatever it is it is an ugly son of a *****.

My MG has a nice little web on the rear bumper. We saw the culprit the other night. It's big enough to drive the flamin' thing
Spiders - they may not inherit this earth, but that's only coz they don't want to.

I can see 8. The second to last pair are very short compared to the other 6

I'd say it's the Garden Orb-weaving Spider

Thanks Gemi, think I found it, either a slater eating spider or a black and red spider.
I have several books on spiders and cannot find this anywhere but doubt it's a new species.
It really isn't that big, about the size of a 2c piece (body) and it's not aggressive, like funnel webs (caught a few of those).
Daddles, we get a lot of BIG huntsmen and the buggers get in the cars and take up residence behind the sun visor, whilst I am far from afraid of spiders they certainly give you an adrenalin rush when you put the visor down and they fall into your lap
My girls now pick up huntsmen and walk them outside, no fear, but mice are a different storyStupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

Oh yes Iain, I'm well aquainted with Huntsmen. Most of my cars have had one.
One of my Valiant Wagons had a monster that lived in the back corner - I'd often see him wandering around on the back window while driving. One day, I'd slithered on my back under the dash board - revisiting the dodgy wiring from memory. And that flamin' huntsman landed on my FACE  Man, I have never got out of a car so quickly, and remember, I was lying on my back, squeezed under the steering wheel.

Here's a question somewhat related to spiders...
How often do you here about pets being bitten and dying

Never heard of one dying from a spider bite though.
Apparently, funnelwebs are not venomous to domestic pets, only primates. Interesting, since funnelwebs evolved long before primates.

Whereas the common old wolf spider has the potential to kill Dogs, doesn't affect humans real bad just a hot burning sensation and feel crook for a while....how do I know? bitten in the armpit & on the hand.
