A major stuff up with wipe on stain.
Hi Guys
I have seamed to stuffed up a staining job ( i know done it hundreds of times )
Item 2 timber chair frames (my parents) about to be recovered and timber wrong colour. I say no problems I fix that for you, the guy recovering the chiars drop off stripped chair frames.
The timber has a teak spray on finish, using belt, orbital and hand sanding coating removed, bare timber. I am no expert when it comes to know what timber it is but it is not quite a soft as pine but light in colour...
Anyway mix up some wattel craftman stain dark mahogeny and black, got the perfect match to other furniture in their lounge. Stained chair frames looked great, left a day then sprayed with cna on poly base clear again looked great
Went down to check on it last night, the stain and clear has flaked off in a couple of places about the size of half a one cent piece.
What have a done ???? Never had any problems staining things and my hands before.....
Don

Peeling finish
Hi Don
Sorry to hear of your troubles - luckily I remember what a cent piece looked like and can visualise half cent sized patches - so here is my 10 cents worth.
You mention spray on teak finish which was stripped - given the localised nature of you problem at present it sounds like -
1. possible reaction with unstripped old finish (probably not likely),
2. possible reaction with any stripper that you left behind (if you used any) - you only mentioned mechanical stripping but no chemicals
3. Are there any obvious gum or resin inclusions in the areas that are peeling?
4. Were the stain and coating fresh products or stuff off the workshop shelf that had been there for some time.
The delay in getting the peeling reaction is a real mystery. I hope these thoughts might help.
I hope you don't have to strip the job again
All the best

Sounds a bit like you may not have actually hit raw timber all over. Possibly the old finish had been polished often with Mr Sheen or some other silicon based cleaner which has gone into the timber.
If it is flaking off I would bet that their is either a wax or more likely a silicone problem, also possibly a compatibility problem with the stain and the finish. Often if the finish is really thick and not taken completly into the timber and a finish is applied too soon there could also be a problem like what you mentioned.
The only other thing that comes to mind is that there was a concentrated heat source applied to the finish to help it dry or extreme heat in the shed during the day. Was it near a window where the sun could shine on it??
