"white-faced building board"
Many years ago, I used this product in Europe as a pin / tack board.
I would really like to find something like this in AU, but no amount of search has uncovered anything outside the US (blueridge dot com) or UK
(VersaKor)
I wish to use this or a similar product in sheet form, behind a dart board set-up in the family room, to protect the walls when kids play / practice.
Cork board is too expensive in the required thickness (about 20mm) and to cover a 6' * 6' area.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

I think the stuff you need may be Canite sheets. Provans sells them ( page 14). of their catalogue.
