Default Hard shellac and pore filler?

My appologies if this is a redundant post, I couldn't find another thread regarding my question.

My question, I have some swamp ash I would like to use u'Beaut hard shellac on. Is there something I can use as a pore filler, or is this a type of wood I will not be able to build a flat finish on. The instructions on the bottle say not to put it on other sealers or finishes, but says nothing of pore filler. I have tried testing without any pore filler, only to have (from my observations) the shellac getting pushed deeper into the pores with each coat, causing the surface to bulge, causing sand throughs.

Thanks in advance for any help.

G'day Millcity - You can grain fill with water based or turpentine based grain fillers Water based is my preference. I have uses Timbermate thinned with added colour as a grain filler on numerous occasions and with great success.

Hope this is of some help.

    Cheers - Neil

Thanks for the reply Neil. I can get Timbermate easily, so I'll give it a try. I'm assuming that I should put a thin coat of shellac on, then the filler, and top coat it after that.

Timbermate onto the raw timber. Add colour to it by way of powdered dye or universal tint and try it on scrap as it may take a but of mucking around to get the correct colour which will almost certainly change as it dries.

Be sure the colour is going to blend to the right colour when shellac is applied, because after it's coated you will have a bugger of a job fixing it up if itt's not right.

    Cheers
