I am a little confused and was hoping someone could clarify the requirements of a ridge beam on a stick built gable roof. I am planning on replacing the roof on my besser block shed. The shed is 7m x 9m. I was hoping I could get away with no internal posts all walls. My understanding of the purpose of the ridge beam on this type of roof was to hold the rafters in place and the beam was not actually load bearing. I was planning on having the beam running the 9m down the centre of the shed. If this beam isn't load bearing why do the span tables I refer to require such large timbers for this beam. I am happy with the requirements fro the rafters but struggle with what is nedded for the ridgebeam.
