Hi all

We're putting in built in wardrobes, one is already done with sliding doors, no problem at all. In the master bedroom we're looking for something a little different and before I do anything that can't be undone easily I'd like to get some opinions/ advice on whether it's feasible.

The plan is to build a melamine carcass and hang 4 plain MDF doors in the same way kitchen cabinet doors are usually done- Blum style overlay hinges but larger and more of them. I imagine this is how hinged built ins are usually done. Each door will be 2700 by 550 Ceilings are 3.1M so there will be a bulkhead and cornice above.

The part I'm unsure about is I then want to stick a piece of mirror to each door, completely covering it giving the end result of a wall of mirrors with nothing but small clearence gaps between them. I was planning on ordering 4 pieces of 6mm mirror in the required size with a 15mm bevel all the way round and a hole for a hanlde / knob to go through then sticking it to the doors with Maxbond.

That's the plan so far but I've got a few questions:

I'm wondering what thickness MDF to use for the doors. Was thinking of 16mm for strength but I know 22mm thick doors might cause problems for some hinges, not the mention the weight. Would 12mm be suitable? or is there a better way to support these mirrors than a solid sheet of MDF?

THe doors will probably weigh about 40kg each (assuming 16mm MDF), anyone know of a really really strong concealed hinge that could cope with this? Looking at Salice their spec sheets don't quite go to 40kg. I suppose I could just throw a few extra hinges on top of what's required for 30kg.

Would it be ok to cut the MDF to allow a 5mm overhang of mirror on all sides but the hinged one?

What other holes can you poke in the plan? I hope my description is clear enough, if not let me know

Thanks

Paul
