Look out. Newbie alert. Ha ha. In more ways than one. I've been into doing the odd job here and there but only recently have started to become more serious about it. Some new tools and homemade benches and a whole stack of stuff in the pipeline.
Looking forward to swapping advise and outlooks as well as experience and a helping hand here and there. Obviously from Australia, at the moment I'm into building a green house, a garden workbench (shh it's steel), and want to make my own tv cabinet with matching joining wall unit. Yeah I know, you gotta start off small in the big world.
Which brings me to my first question. I was looking at Pine 50x25's for the main supports with 12 or 15mm pine ply for the panelling. A dark stain on the supports and just a nice sand and lacquer for the panelling. Two tone. Now seeing that pine is a soft and ply is regarded as a hard (as I'm told) will it be solid enough and is there a better sheeting option (with cost in mind).
At the moment I'm not sure which way to go so a bit of feedback may help.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Not sure which project you are making out of the Pine and ply but assuming its the tv cabinet then depending on method used in construction, the materials you mention should be quite okay and strong enough. I am in the process at the moment of building a tv cabinet for a 42 inch tv and using pine for the carcass of similar dimensions and it is quite sturdy enough to handle the load I intend to put on it.

@munruben; i haven't got right into the planning stage yet. got a design, but still need a couple of tools and make up some bench tops to make a router table and a saw table. basically i was thinking of some 100*50 for the main supports as one piece to the legs and fix the ply direct as a one piece front, same as sides and top. 2 cupboards and a space for dvd player and stuff with a piece of perspex (2yr old boy) cover. haven't built a large cabinet as this so if i'm off track with something, please let me know.

having a look through to pick out the best joint to use.
