Maybe they just can't think for themselves. have to copy the good old USA describing in less than favourable terms the land south of their border.

    Nothing unfavourable about it.

It's just Vic is "south of the border"

Hey, we have to call you something.

Just be thankful you're not refered to as cockraches

When my family moved from Gippsland to NSW in the early 70's, the kids at school found out we came from Victoria and they started calling us 'Spiks'. We had no idea what this was about and for a long time we just thought it was a derogatory term for Victorians and nothing more. Later on, the term 'Mexican' became popular and around the same time I found out that 'spik' was a derogatory term for Mexicans used by Americans. Then the penny dropped. From south of the border, down Mexico way.

In the other state in QLD (being FNQ) I generally found that anybody south of where the banana bender lived was a Mexican, and I'm quite sure that many FNQ people may not have even been aware that Victoria existed!. Anybody with "those foriegn plates" on their car could be termed a Mexican. Mind these are people that were yet to discover what that stalk thingy on the side of the steering column was .

    and whats this!!

My wordy....WA stands for Wait Awhile...we hardly get ever get asked anything, let alone talked to...(that may be a political statement:confused: )

But anyway the world is strange place, and down under may just that little more fun than most. I always try and buy good quality Carnarvon Bananas for my pancakes, they taste heaps better than those terrible things from northern NSW .

    Cheers

Having been brought up in Far, Far, Far North Qld, I can assure you Squizz is speaking very truthfully.

If you lived in Cairns, that was down in the "Big Smoke" while anyone living below Rockhampton was considered to be a "Southerner", and a Mexican was someone from South of the border. Victoria was the first word represented on the brand of a brewed beverage which was only ever known as VB. No one ever cared what the other letter stood for, and it was only years later that I understood it to be the German word for "thanks".

How the real Mexicans (in NSW) ever came to think of the Vics WEST OF THE BORDER as Mexicans is a little confusing.

    Cheers,

P (Oh yes we have no bananas!)

I understand the South of the Border, but, in general anything south of the border in the USA is inferior to north.
My point being that this is an equatorial matter and, therefore, we have it **** about

Its like a lot of things, we grow up hearing it and it continues on but eventually nobody really knows the origin of it.

Without getting political, its liek kids growing up in war torn countries, they are brought up to hate another country, yet do not know the reasons why.
