Used to be involved in buying container loads of electrical products and cost was always apportioned based on volume rather than weight so i assume this would still apply or maybe a combination of both for smaller/single orders.
Whats the size of your 50 pounder?

Go to www.ups.com and then to their shipping submenu and then use their calculate time and cost. This will be the RETAIL cost ... a supplier may get better results.

You could also try www.fedex.com or usps.com.au (their post office).

U.P.S price is $548.00 usd by their website
The fedex website is a horror and anyway I had a package (500grams) delivered by them last year. It cost me almost $100au so I won't use them this time.
The vendor wouldn't mail it and I seriouisly wanted those things. (would have cost about $20 in the post but the seppo post office isnt well liked)

Try doing a 'google' search on freight forwarders - a few phone calls here or e-mails to the US might get a better price ... as mentioned by beejay they may want the volumetric weight.

Second that! FedEx ripped me off big time just recently, adding another $87 onto the freight already paid on a parcel, while UPS delivered an almost identical parcel at no additional charge. I received a parcel from Rockler yesterday sent by US Mail with no additional charge and total time was 8 days.
    Cheers,

how fast do you want it?

if you can wait then it might be cheaper by sea. Most big removal companies will do a part load and charge by volume and I'm assuming your parcel isn't huge just heavy.
no-one said on their death bed I wish I spent more time in the office!
