This is a table i got for $ it doesn't really hold any value as the table top is a replacement and needs replacing again with something a little more decent, what would be the best thing to replace the table top that would be in a simliar style to the rest of the table??

Hi Allison, good luck with the project.
Could you post a couple more pics, one showing the top itself and the other from underneath showing how the legs are joined to the top. It seems from the pics so far that the table is so minimalist that you could replace it with almost anything.

there's one of the fixing on the corners and the table top is just screwed up throught holes through the rails from underneath.

the top isn't original and is just a piece of what looks to be an old crappy chipboard cupboard or something.

Without knowing what design or style you are looking for, my first suggestion is to go to Bunnings and, in the timber section, they should/will have wide boards of pine which are made up by joining smaller pieces of pine and the most common brand is PORTA. From memory they have boards up to 420mm wide and 2 pieces of that should make a new top for you. Likewise I don't know what tools or skills you have but it would be better to join the 2 pieces along their edge before fixing it to the legs. Finishing it will require sanding but the individual boards are already sanded so you will only be sanding the join and ends. Then you can stain it if required and finish it off with something like wipe-on-poly which, as the name suggests, is just wiped on with a cloth.

I think that is just a simple table. You can go to your near furniture maker to ask if they can do a table with that size but different design. I think it would also look more elegant if you will ask them to varnish it.
