Hsc 2011
We've had quite a few queries from this year's crop of HSC students seeking advice on how to finish their projects.
Now is the time for next year's crop to realise that finishing is not a last minute decision that can be taken lightly. Many mistakes in woodworking can be hidden but not the final finish.
At the very least they should make sure they are conversant with the features of the finishes they might wish to use and, if they want to use something like french polish, to take the time to acquire the necessary skills. It is never time wasted and would be a plus factor in describing the history of the making of the piece.
Good luck,
Jim

Good point jim. The final finish can be truly exciting or totally heart breaking.

I fall into that category :P
Althoguh I hate been in the situation now, I'll definitely enjoy sitting back next year watching the next wave of last-minuters.

i think this is the thread to ask this so here goes.
For my major work Im building a Victorian Ash desk with Jarrah border around the desktop.
I was going to use lacquer to finish the desk but today my friend recommended I use a oil.
What do you think I should use.
I would prefer to just lacquer the entire desk if it will look the same.

Hi Joosh,
Why not grab two pieces of the timber that you are useing and try the oil on one, and the lacquer on the other. might make the decision harder, but then you'll know what the finished product will look like.
Baz.....lifes to short, learn from other peoples mistakes.
