Default The Kauri Project - Sydney

In 1853, the then director of the Sydney Botanic Gardens, Charles Moore, collected a Pacific Kauri (Agathis Moorei) and planted it in the gardens. In 2006, the tree was killed prematurely by the 20,000+ flying foxes that nest in the gardens.
The tree was milled and dried, and this year, 30 Australian designer/makers were able to use the wood to make objects of their choice. These will go on exhibition and sale at the Lion Gate Lodge in the gardens, from Sat 21st August to Sun 29th August. You may also purchase tickets to the opening on Friday 20th Aug. Details are on the attached brochures.

Thanks Des. I was amazed out how stable it was, as I used some fairly thin boards and expected some problems, but was pleasantly surprised.
I'm looking forward to seeing the other work, as I know it's been a special project for most of the makers.

About two nights ago I went to the link to the botanical gardens link and saw that this event was coming up. Got me thinking about this tree and where it was in the gardens. I asked my partner if she wanted to go on Saturday the 21st. So we will be there on the 21st.

Today I got to thinking that other people might want to know about this. Well not only are people already aware but at least one person from the forum has even contributed.

It is a very small world.

Exhibition opening tonight was a sell-out, with lots of sales, but everything stays on show until the end of the exhibition, and there are still lots of goodies.
There's some amazing stuff there, well worth a look.

I was there today at about 11am. Now with out giving away too much on the items that have been created.

    WOW

    There is some amazing creations.

AlexS regarding the items that you created, the photos just do not do them justice. They do need to be looked at in person to get an idea of what you have created.

Well, it's all over. We (the makers) had a great exhibition, and I think the gardens and the customers are pretty happy too. I was chuffed that they chose one of my boxes as the raffle prize, and another one as a gift for the retiring EO of the Friends of the Garden. Most of the work sold, a lot of it on the opening night, and it's generated a lot of new work. I have one commission from it, and as far as I can tell, it's generated over 100 hits on my website. Had trouble keeping up with the demand for cards.
Had minor damage to one of my boxes, so that has to be repaired it before it goes to the customer, but other than that, a great week.
