Question hsc major project coffee table with chess board

hey guys. i have made this for my hsc major work and now need a finisher.

Main timber is jarrah, chessboard feature is wenge and silver ash, inlays are huon pine.

i would like to show off colours, i would like it to be as durable as possible(able to handle hot mugs etc) no repair will be done in the future . i also only have 2 weeks left. i wish to show as many skills as possible so i dont mind if application is difficult

i dont know much about woodwork and nothing about finishers.
also, if anyone knows a good website to research/buy chess pieces of that would be appreciated.

    thanks michael

The simplest and most durable finish would be a half-dozen coats of Minwax Wipe On Poly (available in Bunnies, search these forums for usage hints); for more durability you could go for two-pac polyurethane (spray-on, if that makes it more of a challenge, especially since it's assembled).

If you want to put your (semi) traditional hat on, the sponsor of these forums makes a nice hard shellac finish which is both durable and fairly easy to build up into a nice glossy finish. You get the bonus of saying that your table is french polished, too!

Or you could go for an oil finish, but getting a decent oil finish built-up over the next two weeks could be a bit problematic. Anyway, I think oil tends to darken jarrah a bit too much for my tastes, so maybe the minwax or the shellac would be the go.

Wipe on poly satin is a worthy finish. Durable. Easy.

How much have you got? And where are you up to?

I'm at 30-40 A3 pages, with about 7k words I think. I'm most way through development & realisation.

I'd go for WOP as a finish on the table.
    Reality is no background music.
