A few red cedar logs
Hi there i have got my hands on a few small cedar logs about 300m by 2.5m
Nothing amazing but feel good about spending some bucks to get it milled.
So my question being, should i get them slabbed or back sawn. I'm thinking i'd like to make a table, most likely a coffee table.
And anyone around my way with a portable mill N.S.W 2477 (around byron bay/ ballina?)
Thankyou guys

Hey Joel Welcome
I'm not near you but if you can't get someone from one here (there is something wrong) but you could try Lucas, they'll give you numbers for any guys with Lucas gear in your hood.
As for cutting suggestions, I'd not bother with slabbing them, they are too thin so will need to be jointed anyway, slabbing will mean you have to rip 'em down after getting slabs done, but swing blading them will give you 4 sided boards ready to use after drying etc. Plus swingblade work is cheaper... the way I chargeI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

boards definitely should cost about the same but you will get better timber. logs that small area PITA to hold still with the slabber.

Hey Carl do you reckon slabbing comes off the saw at the same 'hourly' rate as compared to milling? Having said this I charge by volume on the blade and hourly on the bar, but if I work the job price backward after a day on the blade, I end up with less hourly rate than a day slabbing???

you need to work a bit harder allan. stop sleeping on the job.
i charge
$200/m3 for boards
$120/hour slabbing.
we will cut between 4 and 7 m3 of log with the blade in a day. but normaly about 5.
$800 - $1400, normally about $1000 day
with the slabber in an 8 hour day we cut about 4-6 m3 of log (depending on size)
so it ends up costing $960 for the day to cut 4-6 cube . or about $192/m3 on average.
so if the logs are there we make teh same and it cost the customer the same.
i have worked my prices so that tis is the case.

4th July 2010, 12:44 AM #8I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.
Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!!I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

Still here
no worries mate - the weather hasn't been helpful either, Just milling some old dry cedar fragments from when I had the Granberg jig, been in the pigsty for 20 years...[without pigs of course]
Now they're wet againbut they'll dry out fast.
Be great if Huey'd leave us alone for a month or two.
Just ring me.
cheers,
richie
