    Default National Anthem

    Unless you're a new Australian, you might have always wondered what the words to our National Anthem are. Well, wonder no more, for here they are:

    Australians all have ostriches
    Four minus one is three.
    With olden royals, we're fair and loyal,
    Our home is dirt by sea.
    I learned to bounce on nature strips
    In booties stitched with care.
    In mystery's haze, let's harvest maize
    And plant azaleas there.
    Enjoy full trains and let us in
    And dance Australia yeah!
    "I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."

    SilentC,

    I have to say your version has a certain ring to it. But what about the real second verse of our National Anthem:

    When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
    To trace wide oceans o'er,
    True British courage bore him on,
    Till he landed on our shore.
    Then here he raised Old England's flag,
    The standard of the brave;
    With all her faults we love her still,
    "Brittannia rules the wave!"

    I am not sure that every Aussie could put his/her hand on his/her heart and sing that with conviction

    Yes it does take a sharp turn for the worst after the first verse. I'm glad they don't get the new citizens to sing the rest of it, they might start to wonder exactly what country they were pledging allegiance to. Of course everyone knows they are really committing themselves to the US

    It could be worse.

    You could be Scottish and have to put up with this in your own national anthem:

    Verse 5 of God Save the Queen
    "Rebellious Scots to crush"

    Well you had me going for a minute Rocker!! Then as the red mist descended and I had to look it up!! http://www.itsanhonour.gov.au/singing_anthem.html

    Of course it's best sung to the tune of the theme from Gilligan's Island, and I'm stuffed if I know who Joyfull was or why we have to sing in his trains, but there you go!

    Australians all let us rejoice,
    For we are young and free;
    We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
    Our home is girt by sea;
    Our land abounds in nature's gifts
    Of beauty rich and rare;
    In history's page, let every stage
    Advance Australia Fair.
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance Australia Fair.

    Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
    We'll toil with hearts and hands;
    To make this Commonwealth of ours
    Renowned of all the lands;
    For those who've come across the seas
    We've boundless plains to share;
    With courage let us all combine
    To Advance Australia Fair.
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance Australia Fair.

    All of which prompted me to go digging and read the words to the Star Spangled Banner: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0194015.html

    Mate, let's just say I'm bloody glad to be girt by sea, and singin' in Joyfull's trains!!!

    Cheers,

    P (and Silent for kicking this orf, and stuff except for that "nature strip" stuff from down South, I reckon your version could be the next widely recognised one).

    BitingMidge,
    You have looked up the abbreviated version; the full version is:

    Australians all let us rejoice,
    For we are young and free;
    We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
    Our home is girt by sea;
    Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
    Of beauty rich and rare;
    In history's page, let every stage
    Advance Australia fair!
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    "Advance Australia fair!"

    When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
    To trace wide oceans o'er,
    True British courage bore him on,
    Till he landed on our shore.
    Then here he raised Old England's flag,
    The standard of the brave;
    With all her faults we love her still,
    "Brittannia rules the wave!"
    In joyful strains then let us sing
    "Advance Australia fair!"

    Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
    We'll toil with hearts and hands;
    To make this Commonwealth of ours
    Renowned of all the lands;
    For those who've come across the seas
    We've boundless plains to share;
    With courage let us all combine
    To advance Australia fair.
    In joyful strains then let us sing
    "Advance Australia fair!"

    While other nations of the globe
    Behold us from afar,
    We'll rise to high renown and shine
    Like our glorious southern star;
    From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle,
    Who come our lot to share,
    Let all combine with heart and hand
    To advance Australia fair!
    In joyful strains then let us sing
    "Advance Australia fair!"

    Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
    Or dare a foot to land,
    We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
    To guard our native strand;
    Brittannia then shall surely know,
    Beyond wide ocean's roll,
    Her sons in fair Australia's land
    Still keep a British soul.
    In joyful strains the let us sing
    "Advance Australia fair!"

    I think the red mist might descend again when you read the last verse

    Is the national anthem the full song or only part of it?

    Ditch all of the above and go with

    Under the Southern Cross I stand
    A Sprig of Wattle in my hand
    A Native of our native land
    Australia you F***ing Beauty!

    Now there's the rub!

    What you have quoted, Rocker are the words to the popular song "Advance Australia Fair".

    I think you'll find that when the decision to use some of it as a National Anthem was made, at least three of the verses were not deemed fit/relevant, and so officially the National Anthem comprises only the first and third verses of the popular song!

    Cheers,

    P (mist-free!)

    Absolutely correct.
    If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

    At bording school the seniors at the rear of the hall would be heard to sing Rule Britannia:
    Rule Britannia
    Marmalade and jam
    Five chinese crackers up your asrehole
    bang bang bang bang bang
    Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.
