    G'day Y'all,
(I''ve always loved the Aussie greeting.) I'm hoping you can help a Yank that's trying to get started in woodworking. I've been trying to mount a "Record" woodworking vise (Model 52ED) and I'm having problems just doing that. If I was going to base my future success in woodworking on how I've been doing with this vise, I'd be very worried. However, I know I'm good with my hands because I was a master craftsman shoemaker for years. I had very high standards for the materials I used and the quality of my craftsmanship. I'm no longer in the Cobbler trade but I'm really interested in seriously working on my woodworking skills. My father was very handy in his workshop but when he was alive I didn't take the opportunity to learn from him. I received the previously mentioned vise from him and my spouse but it's different from any other vise I've ever used.
I'm really embarrassed by my ignorance. (For instance; What is the "dog" feature. What is it's intended use/function? ( I remember when I started fly fishing and tying my own flies. I was embarrassingly ignorant in that too.) If anybody can help me by educating me and sharing their knowledge I'd really appreciate it.
    Thank you,
    Patt
