A load of Rot
We have a rot problem - started on the butterfly steps on the south side and in the shade most of the time and thought pare for the position - hardwood hand rails and some of the hardwood steps - then the pine fascia board used as trim around the halfway landing has rotted right out leaving the paint shell.
Now out the back - facing north and in the sun all day but exposed to the weather - same situation - handrail - deck timber - fascia boards one joist and a 5"x5" vertical support - soft as sponge rubber and wet inside - easy to dig your fingers into and pull bits off.
Had a builder out to look - he recommends replacing some of the structural stuff but just wants to cut out the cosmetic stuff and bog - is that good enough? He also says treated hardwood and pine will still rot and no real advantage using it in exposed areas. ??? Should I look elsewhere? Actually only needed a quote to get it documented for the tax man before the end of the financial year - thinking of doing the work myself except half the area is 10 meters off the ground
