    Default WOODWORKING QUIZ 25th January 2005

    Good Day astute and amusing woodworkers. A bit of a double edged one today because I want two answers please.

    What is an ASTRAGAL?

    I am sorry but I shall be away for a couple of days due to the warmth of the weather, the Australia day holiday and the need to soak my feet in the briny.
    I trust you will all enjoy the celebration of our nation in safety.

    1. An astragal is what is usually termed a 'half round' profile. It is accompanied by a narrow fillet on either side

    2. A piece attached to paired doors where their edges meet to act (usually) as a weather seal. Sometimes it is there to block light, smoke or flame. If they overlap it is called a "split-astragal"

    I know you said you only wanted two answers, but I'd like to go for the bonus points:

    3. Would you believe muntins, or sash bars, are also called astragals?

    4. there is a bone in the ankle that is also an astragal

    It's also a brand name for a particular type of double coated zinc on metalwork;

    There's your standard gal,
    and for a bit more money, you can have Astragal.
