G'day all,

I am a newbie to the forum, but have picked up a lot of useful information over the last few months on table saws, routers and general woodworking tools. I have just completed my first dining room table which I made from spotted gum. Have started on chairs to go with the table-making a prototype from softwood to see how that goes.

On different note, has anyone any recommendations on where to get a mortise gauge and mallet - have looked around a bit myself and they are available on the cabatec website but would like to compare with some other prices before I buy.

A bit uncomfortable posting pics of the table as its my first, but i will do.
Dont be too harsh please

It hasnt been stained or varnished but i sanded it well using an iqon belt sander i got from mitre 10 . Sand paper grades were 60 to 80 to 120 to 180.
The legs were tapered using a maktec planer - think i should have spent a few extra bucks and got a heavier, more capable planer. The maktec does the job well, but takes a bit time.

At the time i didnt have a table saw, so cutting was done with a regular circular saw.

Could someone leave a comment on the table, getting no replies just leaves me thinking one thing - its complete sxxt As they say a picture can tell a thousand words, it is rough and ready especially the joints, any advice would be appreciated.

Nice simple design, well executed, and the timber is terrific!

Your first table. Good effort.

If you like it then that is all that matters. Should not be concern with what other people think of your style. That is what makes us human.

There could be wood movement and the mitre joints could open up.

I made a hall table for a friend and did something similar as I made a mistake and took too much wood off and it became too narrow on top. I am keeping an eye out to see if it does move. Then I will make another top.

thanks for the advice. i like what you said about its not what other people think but what the person themselves are happy with, truth is i am a bit disappointed with the way the table turned out, but i learned a lot from the project and it reignited some lost woodworking skills i had way back in highschool.
