finishing over epoxy resin
Hi everyone,
I've put together a skateboard deck using laminates of Vic Ash and Sydney Blue Gum. In typical fashion, some sap pockets have appeared in the Vic Ash during thicknessing, which I will fill with clear epoxy resin of some sort.
My question relates to finishing over the resin. I've done a bit of a search thru the forum but not found the answer.
Are there any of the typical finishes that can or can't be used over the top of 2part
epoxy resin? I was hoping to 2pack polyurethane the whole thing.
Thanks

Two pack poly shouldn't be a problem over most epoxies - it tends to be the recommended coating.

Many luthiers french polish and finish with laquer after pore filling using epoxy finishing resin without any problems.

Make sure the epoxy is thoruoghly washed off with thinners before applying anything as some of it seems to keep a bit of a sticky scum in the surface especially if not properly mixed.

Just a thought.
It might pay to seal the whole surface with a couple of thin coats of epoxy. Do the second coat when the first is tacky then sand back smooth after washing with thinners or an ammonia solution (removes any wax residue as Neil recommended). The surface will then be uniform as far as absorbing finish and it will be well and truly waterproofed.
