After years of waiting, I have finally moved to a house with space for a workshop (workbench under construction) and room to swing a few cats - even if it does mean the cars live under a carport.
I find myself in the situation where I have messed around renovating a 1880's house, making a few (very) odd bits of furniture, but without the foundation knowledge of how to use hand tools properly, basic joinery skills/the ability to select good timber to work with.

I have fond memories as a kid in my grandfathers workshop - a wall of hand planes, a complete 19th C tool chest that was his grandfathers (sadly sold), chisels made by his old mate 'Horrie', who I since found out worked at Titan in Hobart?

So, to describe a style of work I'm interested in - use of traditional hand tools (to a point - I'm not a luddite), I have some old prints I would like to frame and some ideas in my head I would like to turn into bits of furniture that will stand the test of time.

I'm on the hunt for a quality #4 and #5 plane (they all seem to sell within minutes of posting - and I have just come to realise that I am after a 'user' not something to sit in a box-although they are nice to look at, a dovetail saw, an old set of quality chisels (Titan would seem a good 'local' choice!) and lots of advice.

Not aluddite but certainly a darksider. You should find plenty of good info in the forums related to furniture making where there are plenty of good Wips - Works In Progress for you to read and learn from.

Hi HP, I too am a late bloomer in relation to working with wood and originate from the south end of the Island. Good luck with your choosen field in woodworking. This forum does offer swaggs of advice.

Using both hand and power tools to do wood working it a joy. I am in a similar frame of mind. Build something that I can use.
