This is really weird
As an addendum to my post "I bought a tree"
I have just been out cutting some of the slabs of my mystery tree up.
My workshop stinks like the big cat enclosure in the Zoo
No it isn't me
I have smelled it a few times but didn't realise where it came from.
It goes away after a while, xcept when I start the dustextractor up and there is dust in the bag from the mystery tree.
Is that a clue as to what kind of timber it is?

Could be! - given your location. Queensland Walnut (endiandra palmerstonii) smells bloody awful when it's dry so imagine it's even worse when greenish
??Did we see a picture of the tree or timber??
Went and had a look at your other post - I reckon Qld Walnut would be a fair bet.Last edited by TTIT; 11th January 2010 at 03:51 PM. Reason: Got curious!

There is a whole list of trees that could be called "stinkwood" apparently.

Hi there, any idea what the borers were treated with, could be the
source of the smell. Also could be cat urine (or some other animal),
bought some timber that had been stored for over 30 yrs and had
become home for some urban possums, stunk to high heaven but
luckily had only penetrated a few mill into the timber, what a difference
a couple of trips through the planer made.
cheers Mick
as an after thought, maybe some stray is using the dust bag to urinate on.Last edited by madmix; 11th January 2010 at 11:10 PM. Reason: add on

Nah, no strays can get in there except canetoads and they don't climb. My dog keeps strays at bay.
Apparently the holes are caused by some bugs that live in the bark, the holes do not go very deep, they are only in the sapwood. All the slabs bar the very first one are clear but they still stink. Once the planks are milled, the smell goes away, it seems to be concentrated in the fresh sawdust.
The sawdust BTW is a very dark brown and the wood itself machines beautifully, hardly any need for sanding.
