Has anyone used water based primer on a linseed based window putty?

I've left the putty to cure for about 4 weeks now and I always used water based primer around the house so I dont want to buy a tin of oil based primer just to do this small job if I dont have to. Im worried the water based might not grip properly and fail down the track though?

Is it safe to use or should I just get a tin of the oil based primer?
